Ford Monitors Health and Wellness Via Vehicle Technology

Ford Motor Company is always researching ways in which to better meet consumers’ needs. Amidst their research, Ford realized the demographic trend of a declining birthrate. This decline has been attributed to the economic downturn as well as a decline in fertility rates. Ford also understands that “for the first time, people age 65 and over soon will outnumber children under the age of 5.” This is because the Baby Boomer generation (someone born between 1946 and 1964) is just starting to hit the 65 and older age range. There are over 76 million Americans who fall into this demographic. Ford also cites that “by 2030 the number of people over 50 years old will surpass those under 20”.

With a significant portion of the population reaching the mid-adult to senior age group, Ford wants to make sure they are able to accommodate their customers’ needs throughout their life. Currently Ford Motor Company is working on several different enhancements to their vehicles that will help monitor health and wellness. Ford is currently developing technology that will monitor heart rate and heart activity, glucose levels, and pollen counts.

Seats That Monitor Heat Rates?

According to the National Institutes of Health, about 1.2 million people each year have heart attacks.* In an effort to try and monitor driver’s heart rates, Ford along with German research engineers, have produced a vehicle seat that measures the “heart’s electrical impulses and detects signs of irregularity”. These vitals are monitored by electrocardiograph technology sensors built into the seat. Even though this seat is still a prototype and not yet being mass-produced, Ford’s goal is that the technology will be able to warn drivers with heart conditions of impending problems or alert them of an upcoming heart attack.

Predicting Pollen Problems

Existing technology, Ford SYNC, will be used to monitor pollen counts as well as alert drivers of other allergens in the air. The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America cites that about 60 million Americans suffer from asthma and allergy problems. “Along with providing voice control and audible alerts, Ford SYNC can display allergy information from the Allergy Alert app in the radio display area or center stack touch screen.” While it won’t eliminate pollen it will help make drivers more aware of the levels around them so they can take the appropriate measures to counteract it.

Driving With Diabetes

The American Diabetes Association states that 8.3% of the US population has diabetes. This is about 26 million adults and children. Diabetes is also one of the leading causes of death in the US. With these facts in mind, Ford wanted to develop a technology that allows drivers to monitor their glucose levels while they are traveling. A prototype system is already in place. Drivers who are diabetic will wear a glucose monitor that is able to connect via Bluetooth to Ford SYNC systems. SYNC will then be able to warn the driver on center stack displays and with audible alerts when blood glucose levels drop or are abnormal.

Do you think drivers with these health problems will take advantage of this technology Ford is working to produce?

What else would you like to see Ford do to improve on the health and wellness of drivers?

Ford's C-Max Hybrid and C-Max Energi Triples Electric Vehicle Production Plans

Photobucket

Last week, Ford Motor Company announced their plans to manufacture more than 100,000 electric and hybrid vehicle models by 2013 for their North American markets, tripling their current production. The all new Ford C-Max, which was originally planned to be produced as gasoline engine as well as hybrid models, will now be solely produced as a hybrid. The C-Max, which was revealed at the 2011 Auto Show, was originally designed to hold seven passengers. With Ford’s new plans for this vehicle, the C-Max Hybrid will only have room for five. The C-Max is modeled after the new 2012 Ford Focus.

Along with the C-Max Hybrid, Ford also plans to release the C-Max Energi. The C-Max Energi is a plug-in hybrid. It features a “240-volt charging system, will be able to fully recharge faster than Chevy Volt and is being engineered to deliver more overall driving range than any other plug-in or extended range electric vehicle” (Ford). Both models of the C-Max are scheduled to be in production by 2012.

You may be wondering why Ford has decided to only produce electric versions of the C-Max when consumers are less willing to purchase more expensive vehicles. Ford will be able to keep prices competitive and possibly even lower than competitors such as the Chevrolet Volt or the Nissan Leaf. This is because Ford plans to design and engineer much of the hybrid’s system in house and in the U.S. “Ford said this year that it expects the cost of hybrid systems it begins offering next year will be 30 percent less expensive than the system that was introduced on the 2010 Ford Fusion .” Ford actually plans to have five “electrified” vehicles for North America by next year. These five vehicles include both models of the C-Max, the Transit Connect Electric, the Focus Electric (coming out later this year) and another vehicle that has not yet been announced.

The C-Max was actually first released in Europe in 2010. Ford states that the 2011 model is “leaving European dealer lots at twice the rate of last year’s model” (Ford). This makes Ford confident that the North American launch of both models will be a success.

What are your thoughts about the new C-Max Hybrid and Ford’s move to cancel production of models with a gasoline engine?

Japan's Earthquake Affects Ford Motor Company

It is an understatement to say that the earthquake on March 11th in Japan was devastating. The disaster has led to earth shattering ripple effects and problems are continually arising. Even though there is no threat to the public’s health, something as simple as milk is being affected because of the earthquake (low levels of radiation was found in milk samples taken from Washington and California).

Most people are aware that Toyota is having problems in their vehicle production due to a number of their parts plants being damaged. What they may not know is that Ford Motor Company is also being affected. A certain pigment call Xirallic, used in Ford’s color Tuxedo Black and certain shades of red, are produced in Japan. Because of the earthquake, the plant that produces the pigment was damaged and is now in shortage. As a result, Ford has asked dealers to limit orders of shades of black and red on vehicles like the F-150, Explorer, Navigator, MKS, etc. Ford is working with other suppliers to create an alternative for this pigment so production can continue.

Don’t be alarmed though! Murphy Ford Lincoln is aware of the situation. We currently have multiple models of the F-150, F-250, Taurus, Escape, Navigator, MKS, and MKX in stock in Tuxedo Black. If you are uncertain whether or not we have a vehicle in stock or its availability, please do not hesitate to contact us. We are only a phone call or mouse click away!

Lincoln Ranked Most Dependable Brand by J.D. Power and Associates Study

J.D. Power and Associates has announced that Lincoln has the highest score for vehicle long-term dependability amongst all vehicle brands in their 2011 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS). Below is a summary of the press release the company issued regarding this report.

The respondents of the survey are consumers who own three-year old vehicles (2008 model-year). In the survey, the respondents (close to 44,000) were asked questions that would pin point any problems they have encountered with their vehicle within the past year. Problems were divided into eight categories with a total of 202 problems that respondents could indicate experiencing. This annual study began in 1990.

Ranking high in this study is very important to everyone involved in the automotive industry. According to J.D. Power and Associates, “perception of quality and dependability is the most influential factor in their (new shoppers) decision to purchase a specific vehicle model”. More and more, customers are looking for vehicles from brands that they can trust. More than 60% of consumers who are purchasing new vehicles “say reliability/durability is one of the most important factors in choosing a new vehicle”. Whether or not the customer’s car is perceived as dependable has an affect on whether or not a customer will purchase their vehicle from the same dealership again. It is also noteworthy to mention that if a customer is experiencing problems with their car, they are less willing to go back to the dealer for service work.

Lincoln was ranked as this year’s most dependable vehicle. Lincoln took first place with Lexus, Jaguar, and Porsche following behind in their respective positions. Even though Ford was not in the top five, the brand did rank higher than the industry average. Those ranking the lowest were MINI, Jeep, Land Rover and Dodge.

Ford Motor Company had many vehicles rank in the top three of their segments. The Lincoln MKZ ranked the highest in the Entry Premium Car segment and the Lincoln Navigator was the highest ranked in the Large Premium Crossover/SUV category. The Ford Fusion was the highest ranked in the Midsize Car segment. Some other winners for FMC was the Ford Edge, Ford F-150, Ford Mustang and Ford Taurus.

How important do you consider dependability when purchasing a new vehicle?

2011 Ford Fiesta Winner of About.com Reader's Choice Awards

The winners of the 2011 About.com Car Reader’s Choice Awards have been announced. About.com had asked their readers to nominate and vote for which cars they thought were the best choice in five different categories. The categories were Best Family Car, Best Compact Car, Best Car for Teens, Best Car Under $16,000 and Best New or Redesigned Car for 2011.

We are proud to announce that the 2011 Ford Fiesta was the winner of Best Car for Teens. The Fiesta beat out the Kia Soul, Subaru Impreza and Honda Civic. The Ford Focus rounded out the top 5 but taking fifth place. About.com cites the reason why they believe the Fiesta won is because of its fuel efficiency and “cheeky attitude”.

The Fiesta also placed in a couple other categories. In the category of Best Compact Car, the Fiesta took second just behind the Mazda 3. In the category of Best Car Under $16,000, the Fiesta again came in second. The Mazda 2 took first.

With the Fiesta rated as best-in-class fuel economy averaging 29 city/40 highway MPG, it’s not hard to figure out why the Fiesta was a voter favorite. Now more than ever, rising fuel prices will impact customer’s buying decisions.

Perhaps next year, the 2012 Focus will be the new winner, dominating most of the categories.

Conclusion and Summary of Focus Rally:America

After five weeks, Ford’s Focus Rally: America has ended. All six teams traveled across the country in the all new fuel efficient 2012 Ford Focus while competing in challenges. This was the first interactive road rally of its kind. Followers at home were encouraged to pick a team to “follow” and help them with challenges. Followers had their own opportunities to earn points just like the 6 teams who were competing. Murphy Ford had chosen to follow the Red team. We played along online as well as watched the weekly episodes on Hulu as they aired. Below is a summary from where our last update left off, of what happened with the rest of the rally.

During week 3 of the rally, the teams traveled to Texas, New Mexico and Arizona. The teams competed in several exciting challenges, including one in Pleasant Valley, Arizona. This challenge involved one member of each team being strapped to an airplane and having to walk across the wing. The Yellow team captured their first win during the end of week 3 with a challenge on Route 66. At this point in the competition, the Red team was in first place.

By week 4, the teams had made it to Las Vegas. Their first challenge was two parts. The first part of the challenge was for each member of each team to perform a controlled “skyjump” from the 108th floor of the Stratosphere Tower. In the second part of the challenge, each team had to take a picture that capture the spirit of Vegas as well as have themselves and their Focus in the picture. Since the online followers were able to determine the winners of this challenge by ranking their favorites, it was suspected that strategic voting was taking place after the Yellow team was announced as the winner. Since the Yellow team was in last place, it would have been advantageous for the online followers to rank them high so that even if they did win the challenge, they would still not be a threat to the other teams. However the reason of why they won, the Yellow team came out on top.

After this challenge the teams drove to Jean, Nevada. Right in the middle of the Mojave Desert, the teams had just drive and stop when they though they had driven for a mile. The teams were not able to see out of their windows and whichever team was closest to a real mile would win. Because of the Red team’s prior racing experience, they were able to come in first. John and Carolyn, the Grey team, decided to try a different strategy. They reasoned that if they did not move at all, they would come in last place allowing themselves to participate in a point repo. After their point repo, the Red team was moved to last place.

The next stop for the teams was Squaw Valley, California. The teams competed in a challenge at the USA Ski Resort. During this challenge it was obvious the other teams considered the Red team a threat because they each tried to eliminate the Red team first, allowing the Blue team to win.

After this challenge, the rallyers were off to the House of Air in San Francisco. The Black team took first place while at the House of Air furthering pushing the Red team behind.

The Red team’s experience once again proved to be an asset to them while competing in Monterey, California. At Laguna Seca Raceway the teams had to drive in reverse in a coned off course while conquering four different weather stations. The Red team had the fastest navigating time so they finished in first place but this only moved them to fifth place in the overall ranking. After the challenge, the teams got to race a lap with either Tommy Kendall or Justin Bell. Both of these men are World Champion drivers.

The very last challenge for the teams took place in Mount Hermon, located just outside of Santa Cruz, CA. Because it was the last opportunity for the teams to earn points, this challenge was worth 200 points. During this challenge, the teams had to tackle an intricate ropes course while answering trivia questions about the previous challenges that had completed. The teams would earn points based off of their completion speed as well as their correct answers to the questions.

After the challenge was over, the teams traveled to one last destination; Seabright Beach. At this point, even though the rally challenges were over, the teams did have one more opportunity to win a brand new Ford Focus for one of their followers. The Silver team’s follower won the car and because the Silver team’s follower won, Margot and Jeff were given $10,000 cash.

It was now time for the moment the teams and America was waiting for; the announcement of the winner. The first and second place teams were only separated by 60 points. The Grey team, John and Carolyn, were the overall winners with the Blue team in second. The Red team finished in 5th place. The Red team really believed that they were at a disadvantage because they fell victim of the point repo three times. They were the team with the most followers at over 9,200.

The final Leader Board:

The most interesting part of the rally for the at home followers was the opportunity to engage with the team we were following. After you had logged into focusrally.com, you were able to watch your team’s live feed from their Focus as they were driving. Our team was answering questions sent in via Twitter. Murphy actually submitted a question asking what was the best concert both Matt and Brittany had ever been to. They actually answered the question on their live feed and we were able to witness it. The fact that this was all filmed and executed in real time was a great way to have the at home followers feel like they too were competing in the rally. It was a really fun experience and hopefully Ford will expand the rally to other countries or considering hosting another one in America featuring another vehicle.

Focus Rally:America Update 2/17/11

The Focus Rally continues on with the teams making their way across the country and completing challenges. The red team, Brittany and Matt, have done a good job at maintaining at the top of the race. They finished first in “The Claw” challenge that took place in Georgia and they won Stage 1. The Blue Team got to participate in a Point Repo. This is when the last place team gets an opportunity to steal from the team in first place. Because of this, the Blue Team was able to steal 100 points from the Red Team. In the Washed Away challenge in Mississippi, the Gray Team John and Carolyn, took first place.

The challenge continued with the teams headed to Clarksdale Mississippi. While there, Matt and Brittany were the winners of the Rally Blues challenge. The teams then drove to New Orleans where they were instructed on how to dance in the parade that would take place in the French Quarter. Each team dressed up and took turns performing a dance routine they made up. The winner of this challenge was determined by online fan follower votes. The Blue Team, Adam and Clayton, won this challenge. Each team participated in the parade.

After the parade, the teams traveled to Houston Texas where they competed in “High Steaks”. This challenge was all about which team could cook the tastiest steak in 30 minutes. The Black Team took first, with our Red Team coming in third. During the Point Repo, the Silver Team stole 100 points from the Red Team.

The last episode that aired on Hulu was Baskateball. This took place in Dallas Texas. The teams took shots on the basketball court and hockey rink in hopes of scoring the most points in two minutes. The Blue Team won this challenge. Up next for the Focus Rallyers is a trip to Parish, Texas where they will compete in a singing challenge. Fan Followers will have the ability to vote on their favorite performance to help earn their team points.

Below is the current leaderboard for the challenge. Matt and Brittany, the Red Team, are tied for second place with the Black Team. Currently in first place is the Silver Team.
