Ford Escape Routes: Casting for New Web Series
Ford is searching for an “elite crop of drivers – teams of two with a strong presence on the web and a hunger for adventure – to take the wheel of the all-new Ford Escape”. Similar to the Fiesta Movement and Focus Rally America , Ford is once again partnering with Emmy award winning producers to create an interactive reality web series, Escape Routes.
Much like the Focus Rally, six two-person teams will participate in a cross-country roadtrip while competing in psychical and mental challenges along the way. The teams will be driving the all new 2013 Ford Escape with class-leading fuel economy and 11 exclusive features.
The grand prizes of the competition have not been announced but we are guessing one of them will be a 2013 Ford Escape. The reason we guess this is because the winners of the Focus Rally (The Grey Team- John and Carolyn) won a new 2012 Focus and $100,000.
Right now Ford is holding open casting calls across the nation. For more information and to enter visit Escape Routes Sign Up.
Ford is also giving America the opportunity to vote for their favorite team to be cast. The winner will be one of the six teams in the competition. Fan support and engagement is a big part to the competition. In the Focus Rally, over 30,000 fans played along and chose their favorite teams to follow.
Stay tuned for more information about Escape Routes. We will be picking our favorite team to follow and will keep you updating throughout the competition!

MyFord Touch Update and Enchancements
Ford owners, ask and you shall receive. Because of feedback from existing Ford owners whose vehicles have MyFord Touch, Ford is enhancing their premiere technology. An update is coming out for existing MyFord Touch customers and on new 2013 Ford models.
MyFord Touch is a “driver connect technology”, that also harnesses the power of SYNC, to connect a driver to the rest of the world. In vehicles equipped with MyFord Touch, drivers use a combination of touch controls and voice commands to control their vehicle’s system as they drive.
In customer clinics held by Ford, customers divulged to Ford engineers how they felt about the MyFord Touch system. Ford learned that while the technology was a key reason behind their purchasing decision, customers still had suggestions of ways the system could be improved. Customers revealed that what appealed to them about the technology were features such as the touch-screen, steering wheel controls and voice commands. In the clinics, Ford learned that customers wanted simpler graphics and controls as well as faster responses from the touch-screen, making the system easier to use.
So rather than dismissing their customers’ complaints, Ford decided to make some changes to MyFord Touch. The newly updated system will be available on the 2013 Ford Escape, Flex and Taurus. Here are some things Ford owners can expect from the update:
-Larger, bolder fonts on the dashboard screen (some fonts as much as 40% larger)
-Consistent design on all screens
-Low-priority images being removed to take away from the screen looking cluttered
-High-use controls relocated closer to the driver’s reach
-Faster touch-screen and voice recognition response time (at least twice as fast as those in current MyFord Touch systems)
-Improved phone and tablet compatibility
-View Ford Motor Company’s Press Release to see more upgrade enhancements
The update will also be available to current owners of 2011 and 2012 models of the Ford Explorer and Edge and the 2012 Ford Focus, that are equipped with MyFord Touch. MyLincoln Touch systems will also be able to download the update; so owners of the 2011 and 2012 Lincoln MKX will be included as well. In the next few months, owners of these vehicles will be mailed a USB flash drive to install the system update. To install the update, all owners need to do is plug the flash drive in the MyFord Touch Media Hub USB port and the download will happen immediately. Customers can also schedule an appointment with their Ford dealer to have the update completed. As this update comes out, our service department will be ready to assist all of our customers.
For more information about the MyFord Touch enhancements, you can visit syncmyride.com .

What is this barcode on my window sticker?
A QR code (quick response code) is a 2d barcode that can be scanned by a smartphone for specific marketing purposes. Once scanned by a mobile device, a QR code can take the consumer to a mobile website, coupon, enter them in a sweepstakes and more. Most smartphones have several apps that can be downloaded for free to give the user the ability to scan.
On the new window stickers, the QR codes will appear on the bottom right corner. Below is a sample window sticker of a Ford Fusion Hybrid. Do you see the QR code?
Once the QR code is scanned, the customer will be taken to a mobile website which will display information specific to that particular vehicle they are standing in front of. We tested the QR code out on a new 2012 Ford Focus that we have on our lot. After I scanned it with my QR code reader app on my iPhone, I was brought to a mobile website and this was the first screen.
The website actually continued on if you scrolled down so here are a couple more shots of the first screen.
Once on the site, you can see the features on that vehicle, share the vehicle information, request a price quote, or search for similar vehicles on the lot.
Today, everything is driven by technology. Customers literally can access information by the touch of one button. These QR codes on the window stickers will not only be beneficial to customers, but also to dealerships. If a customer is really excited about their new car, they may decide to share their vehicle’s mobile website with a friend or family member. This will help spread the word about the dealership, creating even more excitement and floor traffic.
Do you think existing and potential Ford buyers will use QR to help in their research process? Would you?

Ford Keeps Customers Coming Back
How did Ford become the best-selling brand in America? One way is by keeping their existing customers in a Ford model. Loyal and repeat buyers are the core to success for any dealership and automobile manufacturer. According to a recent report released by Forbes and Experian Automotive , Ford has the second largest percent of loyal buyers. According to the data, 46.5 percent of Ford’s sales are from repeat buyers.
While Ford was not number one overall, the automaker still dominated the Top Ten Most Brand-Loyal models . Out of the top ten cars that were ranked as having the most brand-loyal buyers, i.e. had previously owned another Ford model, six were Ford models. Ford’s top six brand-loyal models are:
1. Ford Fiesta:
63% of all Ford Fiestas were purchased by brand-loyal Ford owners
2. Ford Fusion:
61% of all recent Ford Fusion buyers remained loyal to the Ford brand
3. Ford Flex: 58%
4. Ford Edge: 58%
5. Ford Taurus: 56%
6. Ford Focus: 54%
With Ford continually expanding their four core initiatives (Drive quality, Drive green, Drive safe, and Drive smart) it really isn’t a surprise that customers who purchase a Ford, fall in love with the brand and vow to never drive anything else .
If you currently are driving a Ford, can you see yourself driving any other brand in the future?

Ford to Keep Fans Engaged with the New Focus ST
There have been many enhancements to the new Focus ST. Even though this is the first Focus ST that will be available globally, it is actually not a new model for Ford. This is actually the third generation of the ST model. One thing that is different on this model will be the new 2.0 Liter EcoBoost four-cylinder engine with 250 PS (246 hp). Ford is making sure that they are perfecting the “muscular sports performance” down to the sound of the engine. The Focus ST will handle better than ever because of the new Torch Vectoring System and Electric Power Assisted Steering System (EPAS). The ST’s exterior was also redesigned to match the high-performance capability Ford is aiming to achieve. One striking new sport design is the one-piece trapezoidal grille in the front of the vehicle. On this grill you will also find a red ST badge. Visit Ford’s website to see a more in depth description of the new design, performance capability, and technology.
In an effort to keep their fans updated with the progress and development of the Focus ST, Ford has announced that they will share exclusive reports on the Ford Focus Facebook page . On their page, Ford will post videos, photos, and stories showing the different stages of the vehicle’s development. Jost Capito, Ford’s Director of Global Performance Vehicles states “…social media gives us a rare opportunity to show enthusiasts how this car is progressing, gives insight into its technologies and builds excitement in this community”. Ford is certainly a brand leader when it comes to their social media strategy, so it will be interesting to see how this campaign turns out.
Are you already a Facebook fan of the Ford Focus page? Will you follow the Focus ST on its journey to the worldwide market?

What does Silver Alert mean?
Have you ever driven anyway and noticed one of those electronic highway signs that flash news and traffic updates? Have you ever seen one of those signs flash “Silver Alert” and wonder ‘What in the world does that mean’? That was my reaction this morning when driving into work. I was driving to Murphy Ford and on I-295 South I noticed that message. I will admit before I Googled the phrase, I had no idea what it meant. Now I am happy to report what I have learned.
A Silver Alert is a public notification program in which law enforcement officials issue and broadcast public notices when an adult (usually seniors) with cognitive disorders, such as Alzheimer’s, goes missing. The alerts are announced using several different mediums including television, radio, and electronic highway signs. Although this is a highly adopted system, this is not a national program like an Amber Alert. An Amber Alert is a similar alert system that is enacted when a child 17 years of age or younger is believed to have been abducted.
Currently, 29 states have Silver Alert or similar programs in place (one of them being NJ). Although Pennsylvania does not have an official Silver Alert program in place, earlier this year the Missing Endangered Person Advisory System (MEPAS) was created. Unlike the Silver Alert, this system does not just limit alerts to older adults. Warnings will also be issued if young children wander away from their guardian(s). The Pennsylvania State Police are responsible for developing and operating this program.
So now if you’re driving and you see these messages, hopefully you will remember what they mean and act on them. Do you think that the Silver Alert or the MEPAS are effective systems?
Check out this article from 6 ABC Action News about how Silver Alert helped locate a missing 75-year old woman.

2012 Ford Vehicle Model Year Update: Part 1
It’s that time again! No, actually I am not referring to Back to School season. I am referring to the flood of 2012 Ford model year vehicles released on the market and Model End Clearance Sales. When customers hear “Model End Clearance Sale”, they usually associate it as the best time to purchase a new vehicle. In this post, I will outline everything you need to know about the new 2012 Ford Fiesta, Transit Connect, Escape, Taurus and Flex. Part one will include the Fiesta, Taurus, and Flex.

How are Highways Numbered?
Do you ever wonder how the state and interstate highways are numbered? As I was driving into work today I got to thinking, why the 95 in I-95 or the 295 in I-295? I remember learning about a national system of highways in school but couldn’t remember the specifics about how the numbers were chosen. Are they chronological? Are they random? Do the numbers actually mean anything? These questions inspired today’s post.
Brief History
What we know today as the interstate system in North America actually dates back to 1930’s. Before then, there were no federal funded transcontinental roads. Instead of the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), there was an organization known as the Bureau of Public Roads (BPR). In the late 1930’s the BPR conducted a study which showed that using toll networks for national highways would not be feasible and recommended that a toll-free network be constructed. There were several legislative acts after this that called for the construction of national highways but none of them provided funding. The funding problem was solved when President Dwight D. Eisenhower enacted Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1956. The interstate system was originally called The National System of Interstate and Defense Highways. It has since been changed to the Dwight D. Eisenhower System of Interstate and Defense Highways.
What do the Numbers Mean?
When The Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1956 was enacted, construction and spending standards were developed. Part of what Congress had to figure out was how to actually name and keep track of each of the highways. Basically the numbers break down like this:
For Interstates:
Odd numbered interstates run north to south
-Lower numbered interstates are in the west (ex. I-15 running from CA to MT)
-Higher numbered interstates are in the east (ex. I-95 running from ME to FL)
Even numbered interstates run east to west
-Lower numbered interstates are in the south (ex. I-10 running from CA to FL)
-Higher numbered interstates are in the north (ex. I-90 running from WA to MA)
For Routes/U.S. Highways:
Odd numbered routes run north to south
-Lower numbered routes are in the east (ex. Route 9 running from CA to WA)
-Higher numbered routes are in the west (ex. Route 99 running from DE to Canada)
Even numbered routes run east to west
-Lower numbered routes are in the north (ex. Route 22 running from OH to NJ)
-Higher numbered routes are in the south (ex. Route 66 running from CA to IL)
Local Numbers
If you live in the tri-state area (PA, NJ, and DE) you are probably familiar with I-95, I-295 and Route 322. I-95 is a main interstate and it is also the longest north and south running route. I-295 is considered to be an “auxiliary route”. This is also known as a bypass because it branches off of I-95 but eventually connects back to it. 322 is actually a spur of Route 22. What this means is that Route 322 acts as a branch onto another road but does not usually reconnect with the major interstate. Majority of the time you can tell the difference between a spur and a bypass because of what the first digit is in a three digit highway; spurs are usually odd and bypasses are usually even.
There is actually much more information available about the highway systems in general. Hopefully this post made sense of some of the numbers you see every day while on the road. If you would like to learn more, please check out some of the resources below that I used while writing this article.

Ford Partners with SunPower for Focus Electric Green Initiative
Recently it has been announced that Ford Motor Company and SunPower Corp have partnered together to help further Ford’s ‘Drive Green for Life’ program. As we have previously reported, Ford has created an electrification strategy that involves introducing five electric vehicles to the North American market by 2013. Ford’s partnership with SunPower important for future Focus Electric owners.
By teaming up with SunPower, Ford will be able to offer Focus Electric owners a solution for energy consumed while charging their vehicle. SunPower Corp. specializes in designing and manufacturing solar panels systems. SunPower has developed a solar panel rooftop system specifically for Ford Focus Electric owners that will generate over 3,000 kilowatt hours of electricity every year (accommodating owners who drive roughly 12,000 miles per year). This will provide owners with “enough renewable energy production to offset the energy used for charging.” This will then reduce the total cost incurred to a Ford Electric owner.
When the Focus Electric is introduced to the first 19 test markets in North America later this year, SunPower will be ready. SunPower has over 400 qualified dealers that are hand picked and trained to sell and install the solar panel systems. Car dealerships will notify local SunPower dealers to set up the installation process with customers.
Customers looking forward to the C-Max Energi’s release will be happy to know that the plug-in hybrid will be compatible with the solar panels.
What do you think of this partnership? Do you think many Focus Electric owners will take advantage of this technology?

Driving Tips for Hot Weather
We are now right in the middle of summer and are experiencing some record-breaking temperatures. Even though you might not be making a lengthy trip to the beach, chances are you will still need to operate a vehicle on some brutally hot days. Like in any extreme weather, you want to make sure that you and your vehicle are prepared for the road. Below are some very important tips that will ensure a safe driving experience.
• Check your vehicle’s fluids: Make sure that your oil, coolant and brake fluid levels are all where they should be. Fill up if necessary and it isn’t a bad idea to keep some extra coolant in the car.
• Check your tire pressure: Your tire pressure should match that of your vehicle manufacturer’s recommended level.
• Check your battery: Before the summer season, it would be a good idea to go to your local dealer or service center and have your battery tested.
• Don’t speed…too much: Some people naturally drive with a heavy foot and aren’t afraid to go over the speed limit. However, driving at high speeds should really be limited as it places a great amount of stress on the vehicle’s tires, engine, etc. In extreme heat, you are better off sticking to the speed limit.
• Take care of yourself: As the driver, you want to make sure that you are taking brakes during long drives. It is also imperative that you stay hydrated. For longer rides, pack a cooler filled with water or Gatorade.
• Take care of your loved ones: This may be a no-brainer to most people, but you hear about it on the news all time; don’t leave children and pets in parked cars.
• Cover hot seats: If your car has been sitting in the sun and you have leather seats, we all know how uncomfortable it is to actually sit down and drive. Keep some towels in your trunk to place over your seats to reduce your chances of getting burned. Watch out for the metal buckles too!
• Carry a fully charged phone: If your car overheats, breaks down or if you have any other emergency, you want to make sure that you will be able to call for help and assistance.
• Don’t jump right in: If at all possible, let your car run for ten minutes before getting in. If you have a remote start, take full advantage of it. If not, just turn your car on and open your windows.
During those scorching summer days don’t be afraid to take a ride. Just take the proper precautions and follow these tips.

Ford Monitors Health and Wellness Via Vehicle Technology
Ford Motor Company is always researching ways in which to better meet consumers’ needs. Amidst their research, Ford realized the demographic trend of a declining birthrate. This decline has been attributed to the economic downturn as well as a decline in fertility rates. Ford also understands that “for the first time, people age 65 and over soon will outnumber children under the age of 5.” This is because the Baby Boomer generation (someone born between 1946 and 1964) is just starting to hit the 65 and older age range. There are over 76 million Americans who fall into this demographic. Ford also cites that “by 2030 the number of people over 50 years old will surpass those under 20”.
With a significant portion of the population reaching the mid-adult to senior age group, Ford wants to make sure they are able to accommodate their customers’ needs throughout their life. Currently Ford Motor Company is working on several different enhancements to their vehicles that will help monitor health and wellness. Ford is currently developing technology that will monitor heart rate and heart activity, glucose levels, and pollen counts.
Seats That Monitor Heat Rates?
According to the National Institutes of Health, about 1.2 million people each year have heart attacks.* In an effort to try and monitor driver’s heart rates, Ford along with German research engineers, have produced a vehicle seat that measures the “heart’s electrical impulses and detects signs of irregularity”. These vitals are monitored by electrocardiograph technology sensors built into the seat. Even though this seat is still a prototype and not yet being mass-produced, Ford’s goal is that the technology will be able to warn drivers with heart conditions of impending problems or alert them of an upcoming heart attack.
Predicting Pollen Problems
Existing technology, Ford SYNC, will be used to monitor pollen counts as well as alert drivers of other allergens in the air. The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America cites that about 60 million Americans suffer from asthma and allergy problems. “Along with providing voice control and audible alerts, Ford SYNC can display allergy information from the Allergy Alert app in the radio display area or center stack touch screen.” While it won’t eliminate pollen it will help make drivers more aware of the levels around them so they can take the appropriate measures to counteract it.
Driving With Diabetes
The American Diabetes Association states that 8.3% of the US population has diabetes. This is about 26 million adults and children. Diabetes is also one of the leading causes of death in the US. With these facts in mind, Ford wanted to develop a technology that allows drivers to monitor their glucose levels while they are traveling. A prototype system is already in place. Drivers who are diabetic will wear a glucose monitor that is able to connect via Bluetooth to Ford SYNC systems. SYNC will then be able to warn the driver on center stack displays and with audible alerts when blood glucose levels drop or are abnormal.
Do you think drivers with these health problems will take advantage of this technology Ford is working to produce?
What else would you like to see Ford do to improve on the health and wellness of drivers?

What Does a Hybrid Vehicle Mean?
With Ford's electric plans for the future, I thought it would be a good idea to break down some terminology that you may have already heard and will be hearing about in the upcoming months. Many people are probably already familiar with the phrase “hybrid vehicles”, but may not really understand what that really means. Ford currently has three different categories of electric vehicles which are hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and all-electric.
Hybrid Vehicles:
- A Hybrid vehicle combines the power of a traditional gasoline engine with the efficiency of a battery-powered electric motor. This helps to improve fuel economy because the vehicle is using a smaller, more efficient gasoline motor because of the electric motor.
- The battery of the electric motor is powered by regenerative braking. What this means is that when a vehicle is braking, kinetic energy is generated and then converted into electricity. Regenerative braking “captures over 90% of braking energy normally lost to heat due to friction” (Ford).
- The battery is also powered by the gasoline engine.
- An example of this kind of vehicle is the Ford Fusion Hybrid
Plug-In Hybrid Vehicles:
- A Plug-In Hybrid vehicle is very similar to how a hybrid vehicle runs and is designed. What makes the plug-in different is that it has a larger battery than a hybrid, which can then by re-charged by plugging into a normal household current. A plug-in hybrid also has the same capabilities of a regular hybrid in that it has on-board charging capabilities from regenerative braking and from the gasoline engine.
- The plug-in hybrid has a “greater range in full electric mode than a full hybrid, which helps reduce fuel consumption” (Ford).
- An example of this vehicle will be the all new Ford C-Max Energi .
All-Electric Vehicles:
- An All-Electric vehicle does not have a gasoline engine and is solely battery powered by an electric motor.
- These vehicles have a high voltage lithium-ion battery pack and can be recharged in a household current. However, separate vehicle charging stations are available to enable a faster charge.
- An example of this vehicle will be the all new 2012 Ford Focus Electric . “The powertrain provides 100% CO2-free driving, and will give Focus Electric an mpg equivalent competitive with other electric vehicles in the market” (Ford).
Ford plans to have five electric vehicles in the market by 2012. These vehicles are the Ford Focus Electric, Ford C-Max Hybrid, Ford C-Max Energi, Ford Transit Connect Electric, and one other vehicle that has yet to be revealed.

Ford's C-Max Hybrid and C-Max Energi Triples Electric Vehicle Production Plans
Last week, Ford Motor Company announced their plans to manufacture more than 100,000 electric and hybrid vehicle models by 2013 for their North American markets, tripling their current production. The all new Ford C-Max, which was originally planned to be produced as gasoline engine as well as hybrid models, will now be solely produced as a hybrid. The C-Max, which was revealed at the 2011 Auto Show, was originally designed to hold seven passengers. With Ford’s new plans for this vehicle, the C-Max Hybrid will only have room for five. The C-Max is modeled after the new 2012 Ford Focus.
Along with the C-Max Hybrid, Ford also plans to release the C-Max Energi. The C-Max Energi is a plug-in hybrid. It features a “240-volt charging system, will be able to fully recharge faster than Chevy Volt and is being engineered to deliver more overall driving range than any other plug-in or extended range electric vehicle” (Ford). Both models of the C-Max are scheduled to be in production by 2012.
You may be wondering why Ford has decided to only produce electric versions of the C-Max when consumers are less willing to purchase more expensive vehicles. Ford will be able to keep prices competitive and possibly even lower than competitors such as the Chevrolet Volt or the Nissan Leaf. This is because Ford plans to design and engineer much of the hybrid’s system in house and in the U.S. “Ford said this year that it expects the cost of hybrid systems it begins offering next year will be 30 percent less expensive than the system that was introduced on the 2010 Ford Fusion .” Ford actually plans to have five “electrified” vehicles for North America by next year. These five vehicles include both models of the C-Max, the Transit Connect Electric, the Focus Electric (coming out later this year) and another vehicle that has not yet been announced.
The C-Max was actually first released in Europe in 2010. Ford states that the 2011 model is “leaving European dealer lots at twice the rate of last year’s model” (Ford). This makes Ford confident that the North American launch of both models will be a success.
What are your thoughts about the new C-Max Hybrid and Ford’s move to cancel production of models with a gasoline engine?
